What She's Wearing: A long, sheer vintage El Delgado Buil shirt in blue porcelain print.

Fall Must-Have #1

Funktional leather-sleeve varsity jacket, $399.
"A play on a typical varsity jacket, this uber-luxe version makes us think of a super-chic high school—one where our lockers are devoid of ill-fitting uniforms and filled with jackets made of lamb leather and silk. A Clueless throwback."

Fall Must-Have #2

TBA- Ford silk pants in hot pink, $189, Funktional Skip Blouse in sapphire blue, $159.
"Avoid all drab fall colors and invest in a few pop-color pieces this season. We love to mix and match bold colors for a color-block look."

Fall Must-Have #3

El Delgado Buil vintage horse print wide-leg pants, $419, and sheer asymmetrical beaded-collar blouse, $269.
"Katharine Hepburn always got it right—the billowier the better. This season our favorite Spanish label, El Delgado Buil, focuses on wide-leg pants and oversized shirts in vintage prints."

NY Mag (Jan 21): Ay Not Dead's Spring Collection Melds Coco Classics and Argentine ArtFriday, 21 Jan 2011

Argentine label Ay Not Dead has always embraced a bit of an edge-- its first collection was titled "Le freak c'est chic." Founded by brothers Diego, Martin, and Noel Romero in 2003, the label is rooted in South American music and art, incorporating liberal doses of leather, laces, and splashy prints. But despite its rock undertones, the brand doesn't skimp on wearable basics, from versatile jackets to slim-cut denim and cropped trousers. Though Ay Not Dead has four stand-alone stores in Argentina and wholesale accounts throughout Mexico, Hong Kong, England, and Sweden, spring 2011 marks its first foray into the U.S. market.

Inspired by an imaginary encounter between designer Coco Chanel and Argentine painter Xul Solar, the "Coco & Xul" collection melds recognizable Chanel elements like tweed jackets, sailor stripes, bow necklines, and menswear-inspired shirting with bold geometric prints, bright colors, and cutouts borrowed from Solar. Ranging from $40 to $150, the refreshingly affordable line is stocked at Babel Fair, Court, and Pixie Market. Click ahead to see more.

NBC New York - One to Watch: NumphWednesday, 12 Jan 2011

A Danish-based label is a classic example of how a team can be stronger than an individiual, as the creative thinking behind the designs is the product of a whopping seven industry insiders.
The result is Numph, a Danish label offering a solid selection of affordable knitwear, tailored trousers and blazers, dresses, flowy tops and basic separates. The group of seven, comprised of designers and fashion-industry business managers alike, have been designing in Europe for several seasons now, but only made their stateside debut last year, giving Americans a dose of the sartorial goodness that comes as a result of so many points of view.
Silhouettes are sharp and well-constructed, without sacrificing a certain prettiness. What comes across as serious style -- bold trouser cuts, exaggerated accents like fringe and shoulder ruffles -- doesn't skew so far off the grid as to be rendered a downtown-after-midnight item.
Currently, Numph is stocked stateside by savvy shops like Babel Fair and Pixie Market, who'll have the goods front and center come spring.

PAPER MAG: Babel Fair Covers Seoul Fashion Week - By Erica KiangWednesday, 03 Nov 2010

As proprietor of women's apparel and lifestyle shop Babel Fair, Erica Kiang jet sets to far-flung locales, scooping up the latest and greatest looks from the streets-way before they hit any stores. This past summer she told PAPERMAG what caught her eye in Barcelona, and today she shares the goods from Seoul. Check it out:

S
eoul Fashion Week just wrapped, having presented the best Korean designers to international buyers and press for the tenth year running. True to Asia's reputation as a trendsetting terrain, the talent at SFW proved to be innovative and inspired. Here's who sizzled, what they showed and why it was hot:

WHO:
Kaael E Suktae
WHAT: Geometric collection inspired by Star Wars
WHY IT WAS HOT: Pushed the the limits of wearable fashion. Loved the Blade Runner feel of his clothes, specifically his angular patchwork crop tops. The expert cut-outs and structured shapes showed off his tailoring chops, honed at Sonia Rykiel and Christian Dior.

WHO:
pushBUTTON
WHAT: Quirky fun line by Seung Gun-Park
WHY IT WAS HOT: Without any formal fashion education, Park's lighthearted line has become a Korean celebrity fave. Tiny puff balls, loose silhouettes, and lots of fringe demonstrated Park's knack for creating the impossibly cute. A+ for the scarf pants, too.

WHO:
Imseonoc
WHAT: Wearable fashion juxtaposed with progressive pieces
WHY IT WAS HOT: Featuring a dueling pianist and DJ booming techno beats, this show was one of the most interesting of the week. The music reflected the contrasting fashion vibes: a classic buttondown followed by a futuristic dress, for example. The finale wowed with the pianist softly singing "When the Saints Go Marching in" as a model sashayed down the runway in a plastic bubble cape.

TimeOut NY (June 10): Your Perfect Shopping SaturdayThursday, 09 Sep 2010

"It totally peeves us when we show up to a friend's birthday party sporting the same damn Zara dress as every other chick. Once we stumbled into Babel Fair (260 Elizabeth St between E Houston and Prince Sts; 646-360-3685, babelfair.com), we found the answer to our problem: Owner Erica Kiang sources appropriately priced, one-of-a-kind threads ($50-$400) from around the globe. On a recent trip, we lusted after a plaid shift dress from Denmark ($149), a colorful pair of structural strappy heels from Taiwan ($269), and an embroidered tunic from Mexico ($149)--perfect for throwing over bathing suits when frying our bods in Central Park."

Refinery 29: The Coolest NYC Store We Never Knew About!Wednesday, 28 Jul 2010

When it comes to New York shopping, we were certain that we knew pretty much everything. So, we're a tad embarrassed to confess that this cutting-edge Nolita boutique completely took us by surprise during a weekend jaunt down Elizabeth Street. The name: Babel Fair, a little NYC shop that packs a mondo punch with hard-to-find clothing, accessories, and treasures that speed up our heart-rate to dangerous levels. The boutique was founded in October by Erica Kiang, a world traveler (hence the reference to the infamous Tower of Babel), who spends a good chunk of her year exploring foreign fashion in far-flung locales. The result is a carefully curated shop of wonders stocked with a laundry list of designers that aren't carried anywhere else in the city. Look for zipper-detailed frocks from Spain's El Delgado Buil and loud print scarves from Brazilian brand Alessa, plus Japanese denim, Argentinean leather, French chocolate, and custom-made acrylic nails from Hong Kong. Plus, the interior is pretty worldly, too—we're loving the crate-like tables, screaming yellow boxes, and the upside-down mural of artsy, iconic buildings. If you haven't checked it out, we urge you to do so—you'll walk out feeling like your style passport got a whole lot more stamps.

Ms. Kiang was nice enough to give us the inside scoop on her five favorite items available in the store right now:

1. El Delgado Buil Leather Scarf with Zip Pockets ($249): "Keep your hands free with this best-selling leather scarf by Spanish line El Delgado Buil---a chic combination of a scarf and a wallet!"

2. El Delgado Buil Chiffon Striped Skirt ($299): "This flirty chiffon skirt is subtly sexy with transparent stripes that reveal a glimpse of boy shorts underneath."

3. Striped Romper by Danish brand Gestuz ($159): "Gestuz hit the nail on the head with this edgy romper that has a slinky Blade Runner feel."

4. "R75" Binary Code Watch by Japan's Tokyo Flash ($249): "We still can't read the R75 binary code watch, yet it's our favorite accessory. Go figure."

5. Morrine Comte Marant Ruffle Vest ($249), & Bow-Tie Necklace ($49) : "This vest and necklace feel like a cool version of Gossip Girl . How could that be a bad thing?"

R29 DEAL:
Like always, we've managed to pull some strings! The Babel Fair team has agreed to give y'all 25% off in-store purchases until August 4! After a week's worth of discounted shopping at this Nolita gem, we're sure that this boutique will become one of your fast-favorites, too. Don't forget to say Refinery29 at checkout!

PAPER MAG: Babel Fair Covers Barcelona Fashion Week - By Erica KiangThursday, 22 Jul 2010

Erica Kiang is the mastermind behind Babel Fair, the Nolita shop stocked with of-the-moment clothes, accessories and trinkets from around the world. With the help of three trend forecasters, she imports styles simmering on the streets of Europe, Asia, South America and beyond. Last week, however, she hopped a flight to Barcelona to observe their latest and greatest wares firsthand. Here she reports to PAPER on what caught her eye at Barcelona Fashion Week:

Hot off a World Cup victory, Barcelona was alive with energy, romance, and a bit of disco edge last week for Barcelona Fashion Week. Located in the impressive Fira de Barcelona, the week kicked off in true Spanish style - with wine flowing before noon, a DJ perched above the cobblestone quad, and the fashion crowd busting a move between each presentation. Eighteen shows were held during the three-day event, and they represented a mix of European talent.

Among the standouts: Spain's own Cardona Bonache, whose Spring 2011 collection focused on a monochromatic white scheme enhanced by pleating and folding details. Bonache's show opened with the very literal accordion dress made with a series of delicate pin tucks. Earning an increasing reputation, Juan Antonio Avalos of Barcelona was also a hit. He showed a menswear collection influenced by Japanese pop culture, with punchy colors and metallic shoulder pads. (Even the hamster wheel helmets his models wore, however, could not hide the hotness of Spanish model Jon Kortajarena, from A Single Man, as he walked the show). And, finally, Indian designer Manish Arora, renowned for his wild M.I.A. and Lady Gaga custom designs, seriously brought it. We loved his sequin bodices, race car skirts, and fantastical prints. In a word: dazzling.

Ever walk into a jam-packed boutique or read an inspiring article about a successful designer and think: How'd she do that?

The answer is blood, sweat, tears, and maxed-out credit cards. At least according to Rebecca Minkoff, Joanna Vargas, Ali Galgano, Wenlan Chia, and Erica Kiang - five women who started with a passion, fought hard, and came away with flourishing businesses.

Time Out NY (April 15th Issue): Best Indie StoresThursday, 15 Apr 2010

Every time we step into this minimalist, white-walled shop, we find something new to lust after. Erica Kiang opened the globally minded boutique in November 2009, and specializes in clothing, accessories and tchotchkes sourced from more than two dozen countries: jumbo weekender bags from Ghana, floral frocks from Australia, wacky watches from Japan and so forth. The prices might trip up budget shoppers ($259 art-deco heels or a $119 motorcycle coat from Japan, for example), but you’re unlikely to find this stuff anywhere else in the city.

Best New(ish) Retail Stretch of 2009: Nolita (Racked.com)Sunday, 03 Jan 2010

It hasn't been the easiest year for retail—but every closure leads to an opening and when deciding on what new retail stretch or shopping neighborhood was our 2009 favorite we couldn't help but notice that streets south of Houston throughout Nolita, Bowery and the Lower East Side saw a lot of action.

Elizabeth St. in particular got two great additions in the form of Babel Fair's hard-to-find international designer fare and cheeky British sex shop Coco de Mer. We are also pretty excited about designer consignment shop PPF on Ludlow.

We know, we saw Gawker's Nolita Recession Map, but so did Bowery Boogie and they published a defensive missive stating—in detail—that there is a pretty burgeoning bright side that includes the recent neighborhood additions of Vince, Hayden-Harnett, Frock, JF Son, and others. So, put that in your pipe and smoke it, Great Recession.

Paper Magazine: Babel Fair Shop of the WeekWednesday, 23 Dec 2009

For a slice of the international streetwear scene, look no further than Nolita. We're not talking about tourists strolling Mott Street, we mean retail newcomer Babel Fair, a shop that brings together of-the-moment clothes, accessories and trinkets from around the world. Peep what all the kids are wearing... Right now, that includes Aussie up-and-comers Maurie and Eve ($189 for their sassy side-pocket dress), San Bernardo it-boots by way of Italy ($249), tricked-out blackberry covers from Hong Kong ($29), and cutting edge Heavy Machine heels from Taiwan (we covet the $259 pairs above).

After working for a couple big-name fashion companies, owner Erica Kiang sought to bring something new and a little funky to the retail landscape. At Babel Fair, she enlists the help of three freelance trend forecasters, who regularly report what styles are simmering on the streets of their European, Asian and South American markets. That means anything from casual Pima cotton tees from Peru to dazzling sequin tops from Brazil. Kiang selects items that jive with her store's fun, flirty vibe and tries to keep prices below $300.

So far, Babel Fair is a hit among visitors and locals alike. We watched customers scoop up those colorful, compact headphones by Swedish company Urbanears ($59) and the last few pairs of Cochni made Italian cashmere leggings ($129). The store's assortment is constantly changing, though, so best to stay ahead of the curve by coming often!

Racked.com: Friday is Haggle Day at Babel FairFriday, 04 Dec 2009

NOLITA—There ought to be a word that means "gimmick" but doesn't have the same negative connotations. While every other store in Manhattan has decided to knock 15% or 25% or 40% off merchandise for Black Friday, Babel Fair has declared the occasion Haggle Day. "Give us your best shot," says their email announcement. If you're an expert bargainer, now's your time to shine.

New York Magazine: Babel Fair Brings Globally SourcedSaturday, 21 Nov 2009

Erica Kiang turned her affinity for international street style into a career. She graduated from Barnard in 2006, interned at Vogue and Gucci, and landed a retail job at Ann Taylor. After soaking up the local sartorial scene on recent trips to Brazil and Hong Kong, she decided to launch her own boutique, which opened late last month on a recovering stretch of Nolita. Kiang hired freelance trend-hunters in Asia, Europe (one also works for Italian Vogue), and South America to report back on ubiquitous street styles and notable local designers. Unlike other internationally influenced boutiques, the selection here is fashion-focused and truly diverse: You’ll find dresses from Brazil, Denmark, and Australia, jeans from Korea, watches from Tokyo, bags from Ghana, fur vests from Bolivia, jewelry from Argentina, and cashmere from Italy. New shipments arrive on a weekly basis, both from established designers and smaller, new producers. ("Sometimes, I end up taking things home in my suitcase," Kiang says, laughing.) Summers in Ibiza, winters in the Swiss Alps, and lost weekends in Jamaica.

Or, in your case, exotic-subway-smell mornings followed by Talladega Nights.

Just hope you catch Erica Kiang’s travel bug at new globally minded Nolita boutique Babel Fair.

While setting up shop in a playful, clubhouse setting with canary cubbyhole shelving, Kiang’s been racking up frequent buyer miles to find clothes, accessories, and toys that haven’t previously crossed U.S. customs.

Among the souvenirs-for-the-taking: a rabbit fur vest made by a Bolivian craftsman, hammock-like cotton necklaces woven by Brazilian designer Luisa Herculano, and sculptural pumps from Korea’s Heavy Machine.

Kitsch seekers will covet the smells-like-happiness Smiley perfume or gem-encrusted cell phone sticker.

Oh, you know, it’s big in Japan.

This fresh, recently opened boutique is stocked full of unique international fashion and accessories surrounded by bright accents and artistic touches. By using her "fashion forecasters" from around the world, owner Erica Kiang brings unknown international designers from around the world to Manhattan.

Racks of exotic patterns in eccentric cuts and styles line the walls. Everything from casual dresses, structured jackets, flowing skirts and thick sweaters can be found from South America, Asia and Europe. Babel Fair stocks labels that can't be found in stores in the US, including Australia's Marie & Eve and Washborn distressed denim from Korea. Dresses range from $100-$200 and denim for $120-$150. Some of the most interesting pieces include graphic dresses from Brazil feature patterns made from magazine collages and a structured military jacket for $269.

The fun accessories and novelties are placed throughout the boutique and add a touch of whimsy and playfulness. Clutches, notebooks, cell-phone accessories, and funky jewelry are neatly displayed on a center hand-made table. Shoes and bags are tucked in colorful shelves, including a unique cowhide large duffel bag from South America ($269), as one of many one-of-a-kind finds that will add a definite pop to any wardrobe.

WGSN: A Smart Assortment at Nolita's Babel FairSaturday, 07 Nov 2009

A great little Nolita boutique called Babel Fair opened last week, carrying international brands that you won’t find elsewhere in NYC - ashborn Jeans out of Korea, Alessa from Brazil and Paris-based Rime Arodaky, from a former assistant designer at Sonia Rykiel.

What the store’s owner Erica Kiang does especially well is slip non-branded product that she finds around the world into the mix, like a rabbit fur vest from Bolivia or a traditional, hand-loomed top from Mexico. An ostrich leather bag from South Africa is trendy enough, but it's also exceptionally cheap, having been found locally by one of several trend scouts around the world feeding style info back to Kiang.

The cowhide bag below, made in Bolivia, goes for $249.

Now Open: Babel Fair's Wonders of the World
Thursday, November 5, 2009, by Izzy Grinspan

Nolita has been hit particularly hard by the recession, but we're not too worried about new store Babel Fair, at 260 Elizabeth Street between Houston and Prince. The shop, which opened a few weeks ago, carries clothing from international designers, most of it under $200 and impossible to find anywhere else in New York. Their secret weapon, though, is a table full of inexpensive little novelties like bacon-shaped cell-phone charms from China and rope necklaces from Brazil. Bottles of Smiley, a French fragrance that claims to replicate the chemical cocktail that causes happiness, are particularly big sellers at $49 to $59 (depending on size), and the Chinese eyelash curlers were so popular that they've already sold out.

Owner Erica Kiang sources the shop through a team of trend forecasters around the world—a colleague in China, for example, recommended pebbly, shiny black duffel bags by a street artist who's huge in Shanghai. At the moment, most of the clothing is from Asia and Brazil, though she's got some French, Italian and Danish designers sprinkled into the mix. Standouts include fur vests and cowhide bags by a Bolivian company that considers both items utilities, rather than trend pieces, making them surprisingly affordable. Kiang says the reception so far has been great, though she wasn't expecting so many of Nolita's shoppers to be European tourists. "They come in asking for Ralph Lauren," she told us.

New York Times: THE 30-MINUTE INTERVIEW Faith Hope ConsoloMonday, 02 Nov 2009
Q. Small designers and boutiques have been converging on NoLIta. Is this neighborhood becoming the new SoHo?

A. There are many who feel that SoHo has become nationalized — it looks like a mall. NoLIta has always had the charm of a European shopping street. We call NoLIta the training ground for the creator, the individual designers.

There’s a group we’ve done work for called Babel Fair. Babel Fair is a European concept that has a dozen designers in the store exclusive to them. Each one is a different use group: jewelry, shoes, cashmere. I think we are going to see more of that, because the consumer wants something unique, something special.

Racked.com: Babel Fair Brings the World to NolitaMonday, 28 Sep 2009
In the age of Topshop and Mango and Uniqlo, it's easy to forget that plenty of international trends go underrepresented in New York. Babel Fair, opening at 260 Elizabeth Street in late October, aims to rectify that situation. The boutique will exclusively carry designers from other countries—Japan, India, Brazil—whose work isn't sold anywhere else in the city. In addition to womenswear, they'll have accessories and a gift section that sounds like it might rival Kiosk's collection of international finds (think electronics, like Japanese cameras, for example.) And while the average price point of $200 isn't cheap, it seems appropriate to the neighborhood.
